Women can get predisposed to a number of health conditions with advancing age. Regular health check-ups ensure that any potential health problems can be recognized early. While nobody can predict what you might suffer from in future, there are a bunch of screening tests that can detect some of the serious conditions early. Below is a compiled list of suggested tests that women must undergo once over 35 years of age: 1. Pap smear test: Pap smear, also known as the Pap test, is a procedure typically used to diagnose cervical cancer in women. The process usually consists of collecting cells from the lower, narrow end of the uterus. It detects cervical cancer in the earliest stages and ensures higher chances of cure. 2. Mammography: Breast cancer is one of the most significant causes of death in women across the globe. The biggest problem is that breast cancer can go undetected for years. So, by the time women can feel a cancerous lump in their breast, it is possible that the problem could have reached an advanced stage. Therefore, doctors advise women to go through Mammography test – a non-invasive X-ray of the breast tissue – at least once in every five years. 3. Bone density test: Bone density test is used to diagnose osteoporosis. A hormone named estrogen in women is known to protect bones. As women approach menopause, this hormone decreases significantly, leading to bone loss. This is why the National Osteoporosis Foundation recommends a bone density test of the hip and spine at least once every five years. 4. Vitamin D Test: This test detects the deficiency of Vitamin D in the body. Lack of sufficient Vitamin D can lead to several health problems such as weakness in bones and muscles etc. It is a simple blood test which is necessary for bone, heart, and muscle health and is hence recommended to be done at least once a year. 5. Lipid Profile: This is a blood test recommended by doctors at least once a year to detect abnormalities in lipids, such as cholesterol and triglycerides. Excess of lipids can lead to severe heart disease later in life. The test is done after 12 hours of overnight fasting to avoid the risk of heart attack and stroke which increases post-menopause.
