7 Best Quail Breeds to Raise For Eggs, Meat or Hunting

Now that you’ve decided on raising some quails. The next thing is deciding which quail breed will be best for you. With over a hundred quail species, deciding on the best can be difficult.

When I tell people I’m raising some quail in my backyard, they just assume it’s the Bobwhite breed, but that’s not the case. So, what species of Quail breeds should you raise?

I’m going to show you the best quail breeds to raise to meet your meat, eggs, and hunting need – whichever the case may be.

Quail Birds

Quail Birds

Quail is a general name for a group of medium-sized birds popularly raised for meat, eggs, and hunting. They’re colony breeders with a preference for nesting on the ground. Quail are generally inexpensive to purchase and raise.

They are grouped by scientists into two families – the Old World and the New World – which share physiological characteristics. The Old World Quail (the Phasianidae family) consists of the Coturnix quail, where we have the Common quail, Rain quail, Harlequin quail, and the Brown quail.

The New World quail (the Odontophoridae family) has the California quail, Mountain quail, Bobwhite quail, Gambel quail, and Elephant quail.

The birds are highly nutritious, containing protein, vitamins, and minerals. An average quail lays about 200 eggs every year and are most productive when they’re between 2 and 8 months of age. The most popular breeds are the Coturnix quail and the Bobwhite quail, but there are several other species of the fascinating bird.

There are over 130 quail species, so picking the ones to raise will depend on whether you want to raise them for meat, eggs, or hunting. However, it’s essential always to consider the quail’s size, age of maturity, egg production, and ease of caring for them before making your decision.

Here are the seven best quail breeds to raise:

BreedMain UsePlace of Origin

The King QuailPets, hobbyAsia
Bobwhite QuailPets, hobbyUnited States
Gambel QuailPet, huntingUnited States
California QuailPets, game birdsPacific Coast of the United States

1. Coturnix Quail

quails species

The Coturnix Quail is the best quail breed to raise for meat and egg right in your backyard. They offer lots of eggs and meat compared to other quail breeds. They belong to the Old World category of Quail birds and tend to be very hardy.

The Coturnix Quail is also known as the Japanese quail, Pharaoh Quail, or Jumbo Quail. They’re the easiest Quail breed to raise, as they have a very calm temperament. If you’re new to homesteading, the Coturnix Quail might just be the best quail breed for you.

The Coturnix comes in different color variations, including:

  • The Wild Type: This variety is camouflaged with mottled brown plumage. This color scheme is the bird’s best defense as it disappears right in front of your eyes when it flies to the bushes.
  • White: Yes, Coturnix quails can also come in a pure white coat. Commercial farmers adore this variety for its attractiveness, sort of like some people prefer white doves over other colors.
  • Tibetan: The Tibetian strain of the Coturnix quail has a unique combination of light beige or buff colors, all peppered with dark brown spots or stripes.
  • Tuxedo: Elegant little bird the Taxedo is. It is dressed in black or dark brown plumage with a distinctive white bib on its chest. Or is it a white chest patch?
  • Golden: I think the description “Golden” is quite sufficient. This bird has a yellowish or golden plumage; very eye-grabbing, if I may add.
  • Silver: Where the’s gold, silver is always a few steps behind. The silver version of the Coturnix quail is dark gray with black markings; also a very attractive puff of feathers.
  • Rosetta: This variety of the Coturnix sports a reddish brown plumage, all punctuated with intricate markings and patterns.
  • Italian: Finally, the Italian sports dark browns, sometimes black speckles or spots on a light-colored body.

No matter the color of the Coturnix quail, they are all relatively low-maintenance birds. Let me explain: they require a little space for housing (one square foot of floor space) and little attention.

The bird reaches maturity in about seven weeks when they start laying eggs. So you don’t have to wait for several months to lay your hands on quality eggs and meat. If you need the hens to lay and hatch their eggs, you’ll need one rooster to about three to seven hens.

There are different types of Coturnix you can choose from:

  • Golden Coturnix
  • Jumbo Coturnix
  • English White
  • Tibetan
  • Tuxedo
  • Rosetta

Note: Some of these varieties denote the color schemes of the bird, as earlier discussed.

So which of them is the best to go for? I prefer the Jumbo species. If you’re looking for a quail species to produce enough meat and eggs, I suggest you go for the Jumbo. They’re easy to identify and a lot calmer compared to other birds. We have a complete guide to raise quail if you want something more specific.

2. The King Quail

quail species

Also known as the Button Quail or the Chinese-painted Quail, these characteristic small birds are prevalent among homesteaders and poultry owners. They’re beautiful birds with colorful feathers, weighing about 1.5 – 2 ounces. They mature very fast, reaching full maturity in about 12 weeks.

Button quails die quickly due to the stress of laying eggs. They produce tiny eggs and might not be a good fit if you’re looking to have lots of eggs. They’re, however, better birds when it comes to brooding over their chicks.

They are native to warm climates, so they hardly do well in cold temperatures. It’s better to keep them in cages indoors, except if you live in a warm area. The King quail prefers to be in the company of other birds, so you should keep them with at least one other bird.

Button Quails are great pets and can be an excellent addition to your aviary. As long as you have quality quail feed and water in the aviary, they’ll do just fine.

3. Bobwhite Quail

best quail for eggs

Scores of people raise the Bobwhite Quail for a couple of reasons. Top on the ladder is that they are good hunting birds, although they also make for an excellent meat source. There are about seven types of Bobwhite breed, all of different sizes, with the largest type reaching about 6 ounces. The species do not produce enough eggs as other species.

The Bobwhite Quail takes about six months to mature, meaning you’ll have to wait a long time before reaping your rewards. However, they can lay throughout the year once they attain maturity, as long as the conditions are right.

Also, Bobwhite Quail are pretty aggressive birds when breeding, so it’s best to keep them in pairs during that period. They are native to the United States, so you might need a permit to raise them.

If you’re raising the Bobwhite for meat, you have to keep them in cages and prevent them from flying. Since the specie has not been entirely domesticated, they can occasionally be startled.

When they feel startled, they fly up and could hit their head on the roof and die. If you want to prevent that from happening, it’s best to build the roof of their pens very high or use a netting roof.

The Bobwhite is the best option if you want to raise quail species for sport. Although the Coturnix is also a great choice, Bobwhite is far better at the flushing flight pattern. They have great agility, speed, and spontaneity, making them the choice game bird for many hunters.

4. Gambel Quail

quail breeds

Another type of breed you can raise is the Gambel Quail, which is distinctive for the turf on their foreheads. They are native to Colorado, Arizona, New Mexico, and Texas. Since they’re native birds to the United States, you’ll need a license to raise them.

The Gambel quails prefer to mate in single pairs. They are flighty birds prone to escaping into the wild because they aren’t fully domesticated. They are quite challenging to raise, demanding lots of care and attention. The birds learn to eat at a plodding pace, and they feed their young for longer compared to other quails.

Gambel Quails are as aggressive as their Bobwhite counterparts and require about six months to mature. Many people raise them primarily because they’re pretty birds with different color patterns of gray, cream, and chestnut.

5. California Quail

different types of quail

The California quail is often mistaken for the Gambel Quail because of their striking similarities. The California quail is the official bird of the state of California, and it’s found throughout the state. They are ornamental birds, and most people keep them merely for entertainment.

The bird prefers to forage on the ground, and it’s common to find them in public places like parks and gardens. They make an excellent addition to aviaries with small parrots, softbills, and finches.

6. Mountain Quail

types of quail to raise

The Mountain Quail is not a very common species, but they’re unique bird. They are a little more expensive than your regular birds.

Raising them can be tedious, as their young require that you hand-feed them until they learn how to feed on their own. Just like the Bobwhite and Gambel Quail, they take about six months to mature and can be very aggressive.

They are the largest species native to the United States, reaching about 9 ounces at full maturity.

7. Blue-Scale Quail

types of quails

The Blue-scale quail is a rare breed found in Kansas, Colorado, and Central Mexico. Also known as Cotton-tops, they are difficult to find for purchase. They prefer to nest on sandy soils and move in large groups due to their social nature.

The Blue-Scale quails are strong layers, producing spotted eggs. It takes about six months for them to mature. Blue-scale quails are very calm and gentle birds. Instead of flying when scared, they run away.

Interestingly, the Blue-scale can be cross-bred with the Bobwhite to give an offspring known as a blob. Also, they can be bred with a Gambel to give a Scramble.

Conclusion

As we’ve seen, there’s a quail bird breed for just about every need. If you need a quail bird for meat and eggs, the Coturnix quail is what you’re probably looking for. If, however, you need a bird that can offer you meat, eggs, and sport, then the Bobwhite quail is your best option.

California Quails are great for pleasure and aesthetics, while Button Quails ranks as the most desirable pet quail. If you want the thrill of a wild quail, then you’ll find one in a Blue-scale quail. Indeed, there’s a quail breed for everyone.

The desire to be more self-sufficient has been growing leaps and bounds in recent years. From people growing their own herbs and vegetables, to raising their individual animals for meat. In particular, chicken alternatives are increasing in popularity.

That’s what we’re talking about today with a specific focus on one type of chicken and egg alternative. Here’s quail eggs: everything you need to know.

Should I Eat Quail Eggs?

If you want to! Most people are hesitant to try out any eggs that they don’t find on supermarket shelves. However, quail eggs are commonly eaten all around the world. The egg is even considered a delicacy in some parts of Asia and Europe.

Japanese chefs often use the egg in their recipes, either cooked or raw, with sushi. In South American countries like Brazil, quail eggs are a more common food item. You can often find them as toppings on burgers and hotdogs.

You can even get them as street snacks in some Asian countries, namely the Philippines and Vietnam.

These cultures all use quail eggs in their cuisine, and all of them use the eggs in different ways. Japan uses them raw over tuna and other fish. Meanwhile, Brazil uses them as a topping, fixing the boiled egg in place with a toothpick. The street food variety sees the egg hardboiled, dipped in batter, and deep-fried. Some areas even just skewer the hardboiled egg and sell it as it is.

Eat Quail Eggs

So you definitely eat them! Ultimately, there is not much of a difference between eating a quail egg and a chicken egg. The main difference is the animal the eggs are from. The taste is even nearly identical!

There can be some differences in taste and texture, though it all depends on how the bird was raised. Mainly, quail egg’s yolk to egg ratio is noticeably higher than that of a chicken egg.

The result is an egg that is much thicker than its chicken counterpart, and much creamier. That’s not inherently a bad thing, though. There are plenty of stories of people trying quail eggs, and switching to them permanently because of the texture.

On top of all that, quail eggs are actually super healthy for you. The eggs contain a high level of vitamin B. This vitamin works to prevent heart disease, as well as assist your digestive system, preventing disorders.

So if you’re hesitant, just ask yourself why. There really is no reason to be apprehensive. The eggs taste the same, so why not give them a go?

What Do Quail Eggs Look Like?

quails eggs nutrition

If you’ve never seen a quail egg, then you might be surprised by its appearance, especially if you are used to seeing chicken eggs. Quail eggs actually don’t look anything like chicken eggs, even though the two taste the same, although there are similarities.

When you first see a quail egg, you should notice just how much smaller it is than a chicken egg. Despite the staggering difference in size, the shape of the egg is pretty much that familiar oval.

The color of quail eggs is different too. Instead of that apricot tan color, quail eggs are often darker and more cream-colored. The eggs are also decorated with little splashes of black and brown color around the shell.

It’s a strangely cute egg, being so much smaller than a duck or chicken egg. There’s also the benefit of it looking like it was painted by a five-year-old. In fact, you can even get an egg that is the size of a jellybean, depending on your breed of quail.

With just how much smaller quail eggs are compared to chicken eggs, you might suspect differences in laying amounts. Your suspicions would be spot on. It might be because the eggs are smaller, or just because quail are prolific egg layers. Either way, some breeds can pop out up to 300 eggs in one session. Yikes.

On top of that, quail also start laying eggs earlier on in life, too. Whereas chickens start laying at 24 weeks, quails begin at six. So not only are you going to have more eggs, you’re going to have them sooner, as well.

There is one drawback for quail compared to chickens here, though, and that’s lifespan. Chickens have a life expectancy of about eight years. Quail have an average expectancy of two. That’s a depressing difference. Although, it just means you’re going to get a big burst of eggs in a short time frame.

So weigh up the differences of which approach you would prefer. While you get more eggs quicker with quail, you also need more eggs due to the size. With chickens, you get fewer eggs spaced out over a more extended period of time, and the eggs are bigger.

Do Quail Eggs Have Health Benefits?

quails egg benefits

We talked a little bit about this earlier. While quail eggs are known for having high Vitamin B content, the benefits actually go much further. Before we dive into that, it’s helpful to know some nutritional information.

One quail egg, or 9 grams, contains:

  • Calories: 14.
  • Fat: 1 gram.
  • Protein: 1 gram.
  • Fiber: 0 grams.
  • Carbs: 0 grams.
  • Riboflavin: 6 percent of your daily value, or DV.
  • Choline: 4 percent DV.
  • Pantothenic acid: 3 percent DV.
  • Folate: 2 percent DV.
  • Vitamin B12: 6 percent DV.
  • Vitamin A: 2 percent DV.
  • Iron: 2 percent DV.
  • Selenium: 5 percent DV.
  • Phosphorus: 2 percent DV.

That probably looks like a bunch of nonsense to most of you, and that’s fine! All you need to know is that despite the size of the eggs, it is jam-packed full of nutrients. However, for those in the know, that is some interesting information.

Let’s break that info down a bit more. Riboflavin and selenium are two nutrients that assist your body with the breakdown of food. The two also help with the conversion of food to energy.

The iron and Vitamin B12 content help to bolster your red blood cells to keep your energy up. As well as that, the two of them can help with your nervous system function.

There have actually been a few tests and studies done into the health benefits of quail eggs for humans. There was a weeklong study done on 77 people who suffer from allergic rhinitis.

The test subjects were given a zinc supplement and quail egg antioxidant. The study found that there was a noticeable improvement in symptoms within one hour. However, it is unknown how much of this was the work of the antioxidant alone.

There has also been a study carried out on mice. In this, researchers found that quail egg yolk could be used to treat an inflammatory condition called eosinophilic esophagitis. This is a dangerous inflammation of the throat that is brought about by food allergies.

It is certainly interesting stuff, and the amount of research on the topic is surprising. However, more human study is really necessary before anything can be set in stone.

What Quail to Raise for Eggs

quail eggs

There are a lot of different breeds of quail out there, each with its own niche. For example, there is the button quail, which is more of a pet than anything else. Then there’s the Coturnix, which is great if you’re looking for a meaty bird.

However, when it comes to egg-laying, there is only one quail worth your time. That is the Japanese quail. Japanese quail follow the traditional quail life expectancy and maturing cycle and can lay 200 plus eggs in its first year alone.

What you feed your quail is not only important for the health of the bird. The diet you go with can also affect the quality and taste of your quail eggs. A quail’s diet is mainly seeds and grains, with the bonus proteins of certain bugs and grubs thrown in there.

As well as feeding your quail it’s natural diet; you should also let the bird free-range. Like ducks and chickens, free-range quail eggs are of a much higher quality than coop eggs. Not only in flavor but also in nutrients as well.

The difference between natural, free-range eggs and mass-produced eggs is actually very noticeable. If the quail is eating its natural diet, the yolk of the egg should be much brighter. On top of that, there should be much more flavor to the egg, whereas the other type of egg is going to be bland.

Given how quickly quails lay eggs, and how much each bird can lay, you might find yourself with some leftovers. Should you wish, you can sell these extra eggs on for a bit of profit. Setting up shop at a farmer’s market would be your best bet, although you could also sell to supermarkets or directly to restaurants.

In much of the western world, quail eggs are seen as exotic and rare. This means you can charge a bit higher for your eggs. At least, higher than that of chicken and duck eggs, despite the size.

However, you need a license to sell quail eggs in some states, so make sure you’re obeying the law. If you’re not sure, a quick google search should tell you whether or not you need a license.

Summary

That was everything about quail eggs. Hopefully, you’ve found it helpful.  If you’re more of a watcher, and less of a reader, consider giving them a view. Good look on your quail raising, egg collecting journey!

BENEFITS OF QUAIL FARMING

Quail farming, also known as coturniculture, can offer several benefits for farmers and individuals interested in poultry farming. Here are some of the key benefits of quail farming:

  1. Space-Efficient: Quails are small birds, so they require less space compared to larger poultry like chickens. This makes quail farming a viable option for individuals with limited land or backyard space.
  2. Rapid Growth and Early Maturity: Quails have a short incubation period and reach maturity relatively quickly. They start laying eggs at around 6-8 weeks of age, which means quail farmers can start generating returns on their investment in a short period.
  3. High Egg Production: Quails are prolific layers and can produce a significant number of eggs throughout the year. Some quail breeds can lay up to 300 eggs per year, making them a good source of income from egg sales.
  4. Nutritious Eggs: Quail eggs are smaller than chicken eggs but are packed with essential nutrients, including vitamins, minerals, and protein. They are considered a delicacy in many cultures and can fetch a higher price in the market.
  5. Efficient Feed Conversion: Quails have a high feed conversion rate, meaning they can convert the feed they consume into body weight and egg production more efficiently than some other poultry species. This can result in lower feed costs for the farmer.
  6. Low Startup Costs: Compared to larger poultry farming ventures, starting a quail farm requires relatively low initial investment. This makes it accessible to small-scale farmers and individuals interested in a poultry project with lower financial risks.
  7. Disease Resistance: Quails are generally hardy and resistant to common poultry diseases when provided with proper care and hygiene. This can reduce the need for extensive veterinary interventions and medications.
  8. Multiple Product Options: Quail farming offers various potential revenue streams, including the sale of eggs for consumption, hatching eggs for other farmers or breeders, and selling live quails for meat.
  9. Environmental Impact: Quails have a lower environmental impact compared to larger livestock. They produce less waste and require fewer resources, making them a more sustainable option for poultry farming.
  10. Diversification: For existing poultry farmers, adding quail farming to their operations can diversify their income sources and reduce reliance on a single poultry species.

It’s essential to note that successful quail farming requires proper knowledge of quail care, suitable housing, and nutrition. Like any farming venture, it comes with its challenges and requires diligent management to ensure the health and well-being of the quails and the profitability of the enterprise.

BENEFITS OF QUAIL FARMING

Japanese Quail Rearing – A Profitable Venture

Praveen, PhD Scholar

Department of Livestock Production Management

ICAR, National Dairy Research Institute- Bengaluru

Abstract

Nowadays J. quail rearing has become an emerging venture in the field of poultry industry because of disease resistant, early age at maturity with the egg laying happens in 30-42 days of hatching of chicks. Quail is zoologically called as Coturnix coturnix japonica with chromosome number 78. They will sexually mature at the age of 6-7 weeks. Different strains has been developed in CARI institute for egg, meat and dual purpose. The housing, feeding, breeding and brooding management of J. quail is detailed here.

Key words: egg, fast growth, pebbles, quail, sexing

Advantages of rearing quail

  • Minimum space for rearing
  • Small capital investment and cheap to rear
  • Early sexual maturity
  • Quail meat is tasty than chicken and low fat content
  • Promote body and brain development in young ones
  • Quail egg (3-4 times) far better than chicken egg with low cholesterol
  • Quail droppings has high fertilizer value which will increase the crop yield
  • As they are naturally disease resistant, they no need of requirement of vaccination and much medication.

Quail breeds developed

  • CARI uttam – Broiler quail (220g)
  • CARI pearl – Layer quail (290 eggs)
  • CARI Brown
  • CARI Ujjawal – white breasted
  • CARI Sweta – White feathered
  • CARI Sunheri – brown feather with white breast

Housing of quail

Mainly two types of quail housing

  • Deep litter
  • Battery system

Deep litter

In this type of housing 6 quails can be reared in 1 Square feet and after 2 weeks of age of quail , cage rearing is best in order to get increased body weight gain. Litter material is used as bedding for quail in deep litter system

Requirement1-3 weekAdult
Feeder/bird2 cm2.5-3.0 cm
Waterer1 cm1.5-2.0 cm
Light24 hrs12 hrs
Laying nest5-6 / bird
Floor space (cm2)150200-250

READ MORE : बटेर पालन: एक लाभकारी उद्यम

Deep litter system is advantageous for layers where increase in percentage of laying, egg number, egg weight, yolk index, albumen index and shell thickness is noticed.

Battery cage

Each battery unit is 6 feet in length, 1 foot in width and has 6 subunits. It can be with 6 tiers height with 4-5 cages in a row. Bottom of the cage with removable wooden plates in order to remove droppings periodically to prevent disease spread. Feed trough should be long and narrow and to be kept in front of cage and water trough to be at the back of the cage. Commercial layer can accommodate 10-12 birds per cage and breeder can accommodate 1:3 ratio of male and female per cage.

AgeSpaceNo. of Bird
1-2 wk3 X 2.5 X 1.5 feet100
3-6 wk4 X 2.5 X 1.5 feet50

Cage system is advantageous for broilers in which increase in bodyweight, increase in FCR and increase in dressing percentage is evident.

Sexing of quail

Sexing is difficult at day old

 MaleFemale
Plumage colour @ 3 weekRusty brown breast feather (only few speckles)Tan (grey) and speckled breast feathers
Cloacal gland (after sexual maturity)Present (secretes a foamy material)Absent
Vent sexing (4-5 weeks of age)Squeezing the vent, milk colour semen will discharge from phallusNil
Body sizeLighter than femaleHeavy
SoundLoud call/ crow at maturityQuiet nature

Foamy material helps to protect the sperm once they have transferred into the hen.

Care of breeding quail

Quails breed in all the season. Sex ratio is maintained at 1:2 for good fertility. After the introduction of the male to female flock, fertile eggs can be collected form fourth day onwards. Optimum fertility is upto 8 m of age or less. Hatchability of fertile eggs rapidly declines when eggs are collected from older females. However, this effect is not observed in males. Egg laying usually takes place in evening hours at nearly 6.30 to 7.30 pm and the colour of egg be seen as mottled with black, brown or blue.

READ MORE : IMPORTANCE OF QUAIL EGG

Care of hatching eggs

Quail eggs are thin and so to be handled carefully. Eggs to be kept in atmosphere free of dust. Eggs can be stored to a maximum of 7 days at the temperature of 14-160C with relative humidity @ 70 to 80%

Natural incubation

It can be done by broody hen since quail is not a natural hatcher. Hatchability percentage with broody hen will be 50-90% and better hatchability can be obtained with 20-25 eggs per incubation. The survival rate of chicks born by broody hen incubation is about 65-95 %

Advantage

  • Reduce drudgery
  • Reduce extra stress
  • Minimise transport and breeding cost of the eggs
  • Time saving

Death of the chicks born of broody hen may be due to stamping by hen, so chicks to be removed quickly after hatching, low temperature and parasitic infestation

Artificial hatching

Hatching takes place in 17-18 days in which 6-7 g chicks comes from 10g egg. Eggs to be turned at 4-6 times per day upto 14 days of hatchery

TempRH
Setter37.2˚ C60%
Hatcher36.9˚ C70%

Brooding management of quail

Quail chicks to be brooded upto 4 week of age either in deep litter or battery cage (reduction in mortality). Floor space for brooding to be hover space @ 75 cm2/Chick and run space @ 75 cm2/Chick. Marble or pebbles to be placed in the waterer in order to prevent drenching of the quail chick and the pebbles can be removed after 2 weeks of brooding. Temperatue of the brooder house at 1st week maintained at 370C and reduce 2.70C per week upto 28.90C (4th week).

Major diseases of J. quail

  • Ulcerative enteritis: caused by Clostridium pericardiumperfringens. Mortality is about 100 % with the symptom of watery droppings. Post-mortem lesions were ulcer in intestine and cloaca
  • Bronchitis : It has 80% mortality with symptom of tracheal rales, sneeze without nasal discharge
  • Coccidiosis
  • Aspergillosis
  • Ranikhet disease

Hurdle in quail rearing

  • Make more sound and disturb human
  • If male and female together it will peck each other and egg production will decrease.

Introduction:

Many folks, particularly in Asian countries, consume quail eggs. According to research, quail eggs are rich with vitamins and minerals, and despite their small size, their nutritional content is three to four times that of chicken eggs. Regular eating of quail eggs aids in the prevention of many diseases and acts as a natural antidote to digestive tract disorders such as stomach ulcers. Quail eggs help to boost the immune system, improve memory health, stimulate brain activity, and calm the nervous system. They help with anaemia by raising haemoglobin levels in the body while also eliminating toxins and heavy metals. Quail eggs have a better nutritional value than other eggs since they are rich in antioxidants, minerals, and vitamins and provide more nourishment than other foods (Lalwani, 2011).

Egg parts

Quail eggs are generally from white to brown in colour and mottled (black and brown spots). The average quail egg weight is about 11g, which is about more than 5 times smaller than the eggs of other bird species. The albumen makes up around 60 per cent of the mass of a quail egg. Chicken and turkey eggs contain a lower percentage of albumen (56%), and duck even lower (53%) and  the yolk accounts for over one-third of the weight in quail eggs, and also in chicken, turkey, and duck eggs. Compared to other poultry eggs, the quail egg has the lowest percentage of shell weight in its overall mass (7.4%).

Quails eggs health benefits

  • Less allergenic compared to chicken and other eggs.
  • Beneficial for anaemia due to high iron content and vitamins B9 and B12, which assist in the formation of red blood cells and haemoglobin in red blood cells, which transports oxygen to tissues.Easy on the stomach, good food to eat for gastritis and other digestive disorders.
  • Protein-rich, having advantages for healing injured muscle, developing new muscle, and reducing weight.Contain all essential amino acids for brain and nervous system health.
  • The fatty acids and protein in eggs may provide benefits for dizziness, mood changes, memory, and learning enhancement.
  • Because of its high vitamin B9 concentration, which helps infants’ brain development during pregnancy and it can help to prevent neural tube abnormalities of the brain, spine, and spinal cord in newborns during pregnancy.
  • Good content of vitamin B12 and cholesterol for healthy nerve cells. Vitamin B12 and cholesterol in quail eggs lower risk of demyelination (loss of the protective myelin coating surrounding nerve cells), potentially contributing to reduced risks for multiple sclerosis and other degenerative diseases of the nervous system.
  • Increase immunity with the help of a healthy vitamin D content and a lot of protein. Quail eggs’ vitamin D affects the immune system’s operation, and its protein promotes in the production of antibodies.
  • Good for strong bones and teeth as a result of a good content of phosphorus and vitamin D and small amounts of calcium and magnesium.
  • Potential benefits for allergic rhinitis and asthma, the high protein content of quail eggs helps you have thick hair.
  • Quail eggs promote fertility in both men and women by providing vitamins and minerals such as vitamin D, selenium, manganese, and zinc, as well as supporting successful pregnancy outcomes.
  • Advantages for high blood sugar levels – Quail eggs are a low GI food with blood sugar control benefits, and they reduce the influence of other foods on blood sugar.
  • Vitamin A, copper, manganese, iron, and fatty acids all have antioxidant characteristics that are good for the skin and eyes.

Quail egg production

The eggs are heavily mottled and weigh around 10 g. (dark colours of different shades and shapes on the shell). Because the egg shell of the Japanese quail has a mosaic pattern and is thin, care must be given while collecting and keeping these eggs. However, a line that produces white eggs has been established. The size of the egg gradually grows as the bird grows. There are various advantageous in raising Japanese quails.

Conclusion

The nutritional prominence of quail eggs is described in the article above is enough for a literate to know why quail eggs should be preferred. Quail eggs have lower fat content as compared to chicken eggs, however the cholesterol levels are similar. Quail eggs are easy to cook while compared to other eggs. Studies have depicted that Quail eggs improve metabolism, promote bone strength, help to speed up recovery, beneficial to the respiratory system, help in maintaining regular sugar levels in the blood, help relieve depression, detox our bodies, boost concentration, and have anti-aging properties.

ABSTRACT

Quail farming is one of the least explored farming sector in the poultry industry. Quail is a robust bird that can be commercially used for both egg and meat production. Quail meat has got some medicinal properties and its nutritional value is comparatively more than that of chicken meat. Before starting a quail farm, we need to know some factors like the rearing system, feeding, management, reproduction, meat and egg production, etc. In this article, you will get some relevant information regarding quail farming and its possibilities.

Keywords: Rearing system, feeding, management, reproduction, infertility, egg collection, meat production, nutritive value, marketing, health concern

Introduction

Quail is a small avian species belonging to the pheasant family. It is first domesticated in Japan. Black-breasted quail and Brown-color Japanese quail are the species seen in India. The black-breasted quails are found in the jungle while the brown color Japanese quail is used for commercial purposes. Nowadays there is an increase in demand for quail meat.

Quail production is not a well-established sector but it has got a good position in the poultry industry. Europe and USA are the largest producers of quail meat. In America and European countries, quails are reared mainly for meat purposes but that is not the case with Far east and Asian countries, they mainly focus on egg production. Japanese quail is suitable for both egg and meat production.

Quail meat has got nutritional value in terms of low-fat content, presence of limiting amino acids and phospholipid content. There has been an increase in quail farming in developing countries. It will be a great source of income and employment for low-income regions in the country as the production requires less effort compared to other poultry sectors. Indian government has plans to provide infrastructural facilities and managemental advices to assist the people involved in quail farming but a government license is required to sell Japanese quail. The Ministry of Environment and forest issue the license to the Department of Animal Husbandry.

MANAGEMENT OF QUAIL FARM

Rearing system

Deep litter system and battery system are the two types of rearing systems commonly practiced. In deep litter system, the quails can be reared for two weeks after that they can be transferred to cages. Six quails can be reared in square feet of floor space. This system has a positive effect on body weight gain.

In battery system of rearing each unit is about 6 feet in length and one foot in width and is subdivided into six subunits. For saving space, the cages can be arranged up to six tiers in height. There should be 4 to 5 cages in a row. The bottom of the cage is fixed with removable wooden plates to clean the bird droppings. Long narrow feed troughs are placed in front of the cages. While water troughs are placed at the back of the cages. We can house 10 – 12 birds as one colony per cage. Male quails can be introduced in cages in the ratio of 1 to 3 females for breeding purposes. Behavioural studies suggest that a solid floor with litter to wire floor is more appropriate as the quail can perform its wild behaviour like scratching, pecking and dust bathing.

AgeCage sizeNo. of birds

3-6 weeks42.51.5 ft.50

Feeding

Feed is the most single factor that costs high in quail farming. The feed should be made up of small particles and it should be specifically made for quails. Quails are fed with a starter diet up to 3 weeks, a grower diet from 3-6 weeks and a layer ration after 6 weeks of age. A quail chick will take around 500-600 grams of feed up to 6 weeks of age. After that, it takes 25-30 gram of feed per day. Commercially available vitamin mixture can also be added according to the recommendation provided in the manufacturer.

Rearing management

At the age of six weeks, female birds gain weight up to 175-200 grams, and male birds weigh up to 125-150 grams. Female birds start laying eggs at 7 weeks of age and continue up to twenty-two weeks. Egg laying happens mostly in the evening time and each egg weighs about 9-10 grams. Egg-laying quails require sixteen hours of light per day.

Difference in sex

The male breast is narrow and covered with an equally distributed feather of brown and white in color. While the female breast is broad and covered with brown and black dots feathers. At the age of four weeks male and female birds should be separated.

Reproduction

Breeding should be carried out with stock from a reputable dealer. Usually, larger birds are reared for meat purposes and smaller ones for the egg. After one laying season, the breeders have to be changed otherwise it can affect the egg production, fertility, hatchability and disease resistance of the birds. Culling is an important procedure that should be followed throughout the laying season.

Quail starts producing eggs at the age of the 7th week. They attain 50 per cent egg production at the 8th week of age. For fertile egg production, males should be reared along with the females at 8-10 weeks of age. The incubation period for eggs is 18 days. The peculiarity of the egg is that the eggshell is spotted with colors ranging from white to brown. From 500 laying quails, we can produce about 1500 quail chicks per week.

On average, from every 100 eggs set in an incubator, between 80 and 95 chicks can be expected. The hatchability depends to a great extent on the age of the breeding flock and the storage conditions. Candling is done on the 14th or 15th day of incubation. Most quail eggs are speckled or mottled down makes successful candling difficult. For better results, it is advisable to candle earlier, say on the fifth or sixth day.

Infertility

Infertility can occur due to various reasons. some of them are

  • Incorrect male: female ratio
  • Age of the breeding flock
  • Preferential mating
  • Inheritance, nutrition
  • Health of the breeding flock, especially males
  • Inadequate feeding and drinking space
  • Overcrowding
  • Lighting regime
  • Stress

The suggested male: female ratio for better fertility rates is from 1:2 to 1:5, while extreme ratios of 1:1 to 1:6 should be avoided to eliminate the lower fertility rate. Japanese quail reaches its maximum fertility rate at 12 to 15 weeks of age after that there will be a gradual decline. Some males show preferential mating which can be eliminated by changing the males frequently. But it is not seen in cage rearing where mating ratios are lower. Semen production in quail is inherited.  Certain semen characteristics like motility and concentration of spermatozoa and semen volume are more likely to be inherited by meat-type males than egg-type males.

READ MORE : QUAIL FARMING IN RURAL INDIA:A SUSTAINABLE SOURCE OF FARMER’S  INCOME, HEALTH AND HAPPINESS

Both internal and external parasitism affect fertility. Nematodes, gizzard worms and acuaria are commonly seen as internal parasites. External parasites like fleas, mites and lice can cause anemia due to blood loss. Diseases that can cause infertility in birds kept for years are aspergillosis, coccidiosis and avian tuberculosis. Leukosis and mycoplasmosis also affect the bird’s fertility. Salmonella-infected birds may show poor fertility and bad hatchability.

Risk of breakage reduces while transporting long-distance with cases filled with fine wood shavings around them. Reduces damaged egg no by 15 percent.

Egg collection

It is better to collect hatching eggs at least three times daily and it can be increased to more than 3 times during high-temperature conditions. Egg collection should be carried out using a clean container and clean the dirty eggs immediately, dry fine sand papers can be used for removing large lumps of dirt. Egg loses its hatchability after 4 days at the rate of 2 per cent per day, storing of eggs should be done based on that. Usually storing eggs for more than one week is not recommended. Eggs are placed with the pointed end down and are turned through 45 degree twice a day preferably morning and evening.

Under natural incubation and in still-air incubators the egg has a temperature gradient with the maximum temperature at its top. In these conditions, the optimum temperature at the upper level of the egg is between 39 and 39.5 o C. With forced draft incubators the optimum temperature is near the center of the hatching zone between 37.4 and 37.9 o C. Toward the end of the incubation period, the temperature can be lowered by 1o C.  The first few days after laying is the critical period for the embryo because slight temperature changes can be life-threatening. But the same changes cause little or no effect in later stages except a change in the time of hatching. At the early stage of incubation quail, eggs need higher humidity compared to chicken eggs. Good hatchability is observed with humidity in the range of 65 to 72 per cent at a temperature of 37.7 o C.

Quail meat production and its nutritional value

The quality and composition of meat are influenced by various factors like the genotype of birds, feeding mode and slaughtering age. The ideal age for slaughter for quality meat production is at 35 days of age. Slaughter yield in Japanese quails is about 64-65 per cent. A quail having a body weight of 140 grams gives 100 grams of dressed meat.

Quail meat contains limiting amino acids lysine and methionine which constitute 11.8 per cent of quail meat protein. The ratio of PUFA/SFA in quail meat is 0.73. The breast and leg meat constitute 33 and 21 per cent respectively. The water-holding capacity of the meat is better in the case of meat from female birds. Sex or body weight doesn’t have any effect on the quail carcass composition. However, the breast meat from females is having higher protein and dry matter than those from males.

Japanese quail meat has got high C18:1 content and a high PUFA and SFAs ratio thus, it is a better food choice for the prevention of heart disease in human consumers. As we see the fatty acid profile in female birds, has got higher amounts of oleic, linoleic and α-linolenic acids while male birds have a higher amount of palmitic, stearic and arachidonic acids. Quail meat is an excellent source of vitamins the range is shown in the table below.

VitaminAmount in mg/ 100g raw meat
Vitamin B60.52-0.68

Quail egg

Even though size-wise chicken egg has got high value than quail egg, nutritionally quail egg holds a good position compared to chicken egg. It has more protein, vitamin B1, iron and potassium content than a chicken egg. And also, the fat percentage is less than that of a chicken egg. Allergies or diathesis are not reported with its consumption.

Refining the market

As in any other production sector, there will be times when consumer demand becomes low. In such cases, we can increase the marketing option by choosing ready-to-eat and ready-to-cook chilled/frozen products for exports or marketing via supermarkets, restaurants and fast food shops. Various value-added products like meatballs, tikka, tandoori and other marinated products can be made to improve consumer interest.

Health concern

Vitamin and mineral deficiency in parent stock can lead to the production of chicks with weak legs. To avoid this proper feed should be given along with mineral and vitamin supplements. Vaccination of quails is not necessary as they are having good immunity against infectious diseases when compared to chicken. Disinfection of farm premises, provision of clean water and good quality feed itself can prevent the occurrence of diseases in quail farms.

Advantages of quail farming

Quails are sturdy birds. Farming of these birds is very economical as they need,

  • Less space for rearing
  • Require less capital
  • Selling age is very early like 5 weeks
  • High rate of clutch up to 280
  • The meat is tastier than chicken meat
  • Meat has got low-fat content
  • Egg has a low cholesterol percentage.

Conclusion

Quail farming is comparatively easy and more manageable than chicken farming. Quail meat is above the nutritional quality with respect to chicken meat and a small quail egg can be comparable to chicken egg.  Quail farming is an economically promising industry that needs some more development and government intervention. The information regarding quail farming and its possibilities are scarce. Limited research is happening in this area even though the scientists are aware of the health and economic benefits of quail products. Standardization of quail feeds, the introduction of value-added products, improvement of marketing channels, provision of technical advice and assistance to quail farmers are essential for the development of this farming sector.
