Feeling down in the dumps, depressed, having the blues…

These are just some of the terms used to describe a feeling of hopelessness and despair that can hit even the most positive of us at some point in our lives.

However when sadness, gloom and unhappiness becomes a permanent mark of our lives, when it creates a feeling of hopelessness, helplessness and worthlessness, when it interferes with our ability to work, study, eat, sleep, and mix with people we may be suffering from abnormal levels of despair otherwise called depression.

Prophet Muhammad taught us a dua against despondency which, in amazing brevity, also reveals the consequences of acute depression. The dua reads as follow:

O’ Allah I seek your protection from anxiety, sorrow, inability, laziness, cowardice, stinginess, overpowering debt and subjugation by fellow man.

This du’a speaks about the eight emotional traits of a person overcome by severe dejection:

1. Anxiety:

An unexplained cloud of constant worry, fear, a boding that something bad is going to take place. You feel agitated, restless, and are on the edge all the time.

2. Sorrow:

A sense of dejection that crushes both your body and mind. You almost believe that it is not possible to be happy. Feeling of not being cherished and respected by anyone

3. A feeling of uselessness:

A Feelings of helplessness and hopelessness. A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation. You are locked into victim mode. This drops your tolerance levels. Everything and everyone gets on your nerves.

4. Laziness/fatigue:

Neither interest nor any willingness to pick yourself up. Feeling fatigued, sluggish, and physically drained. Your whole body may feel heavy, and even small tasks are exhausting or take longer to complete.

5. Cowardice:

Lack of self-confidence. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.

6. Stinginess:

Not interested in the welfare of others. You are too preoccupied in your own gloom to even think of the happiness of other people.

7. Overpowering debt:

Trouble focusing, making decisions, you become financially reckless in the hope of buying yourself out of misery. You engage in escapist behavior

8. Subjugation by fellow persons

Under the control of other people. You feel pressured by those around you. You no longer believe in yourself and feel compelled to toe the line.

A Muslim should always assume the best about Allah. He should strive to do his best and expect the best outcome: that Allah will accept his good deeds; that Allah from His grace will forgive him; and that Allah will bless him to live out his life, until its conclusion, upon faith. Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said:

None of you should die except while assuming the best about Allah. (Muslim)

Our challenge under all circumstances is to act as best as we can with the firm conviction that whatever afflicts us was never meant to miss us and whatever misses us was never meant for us. We believe that our life ultimately unfolds in accordance to the will of Allah!

No calamity befalls the earth and neither your own selves unless it be laid down in our decree long before we bring it into being – verily that is easy for Allah. So that you may not despair over whatever good escapes you nor become arrogant over whatever good has come your way. (Quran 57: 22)

May Allah grant us the ability to turn each anxiety, each fear and each concern into an opportunity for making dua and turning to Him with repentance.

Anas bin Malik may Allah be pleased with him narrates that the Messenger of Allah, may Allah send peace and blessings upon him said to Abu Talha, ”Choose one of your boys to serve me”, so Abu Talha took me placing me behind him (on the means of transport). I would attend to the Messenger of Allah’s needs whenever he would stop to rest. I would hear him recite the following a lot:

Oh Allah, I seek refuge in you from anxiety, grief, weakness, laziness, miserliness, cowardice, extreme debt and being overpowered by other men.

I continued serving him until we returned from (a place called) Khaybar, and he returned with Safiyah bint Huyay who had received (in booty). I would see him making a cushion for her with a cloak or garment and seat her behind him until we reached (a place called) Al Sahba, where he made some Hais (a kind of dish) in a leather mat and sent me (to call people). So I called some people and they ate, and this was the meal given on the consummation of his marriage with her. He then continued until the mountain of Uhud could be seen upon which he said ”This is a mountain which loves us and we love it”. Then when Madinah came within sight he said ”Oh Allah, Verily I sanctify whatever is between its two mountains as Ibrahim sanctified Makkah. Oh Allah, bless them in their Mud and Saa”. (Units of measurement, i.e. bless them in whatever they measure in these two units).

عن أَنَس بْن مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأَبِي طَلْحَةَ الْتَمِسْ لَنَا غُلَامًا مِنْ غِلْمَانِكُمْ يَخْدُمُنِي فَخَرَجَ بِي أَبُو طَلْحَةَ يُرْدِفُنِي وَرَاءَهُ فَكُنْتُ أَخْدُمُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كُلَّمَا نَزَلَ فَكُنْتُ أَسْمَعُهُ يُكْثِرُ أَنْ يَقُولَ

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْنِ وَغَلَبَةِ الرِّجَالِ

فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَخْدُمُهُ حَتَّى أَقْبَلْنَا مِنْ خَيْبَرَ وَأَقْبَلَ بِصَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ حُيَيٍّ قَدْ حَازَهَا فَكُنْتُ أَرَاهُ يُحَوِّي وَرَاءَهُ بِعَبَاءَةٍ أَوْ كِسَاءٍ ثُمَّ يُرْدِفُهَا وَرَاءَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِالصَّهْبَاءِ صَنَعَ حَيْسًا فِي نِطَعٍ ثُمَّ أَرْسَلَنِي فَدَعَوْتُ رِجَالًا فَأَكَلُوا وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ بِنَاءَهُ بِهَا ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ حَتَّى إِذَا بَدَا لَهُ أُحُدٌ قَالَ هَذَا جُبَيْلٌ يُحِبُّنَا وَنُحِبُّهُ فَلَمَّا أَشْرَفَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُحَرِّمُ مَا بَيْنَ جَبَلَيْهَا مِثْلَ مَا حَرَّمَ بِهِ إِبْرَاهِيمُ مَكَّةَ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِي مُدِّهِمْ وَصَاعِهِمْ.

انس بن مالک رضی اللہ عنہ بیان کرتے ہیں کہ رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے ابوطلحہ رضی اللہ عنہ سے فرمایا: ”اپنے لڑکے میں سے کسی کو میری خدمت کے لیے چن لو“، تو ابوطلحہ رضی اللہ عنہ مجھے اپنے پیچھے بٹھا کر لے گئے۔ نقل و حمل کے ذرائع پر)۔ جب بھی رسول اللہ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم آرام کرنے کے لیے رکتے تو میں ان کی ضروریات پوری کرتا۔ میں اسے بہت زیادہ پڑھتے ہوئے سنوں گا:

اے اللہ میں بے چینی، غم، کمزوری، کاہلی، کنجوسی، بزدلی، حد سے زیادہ قرض اور دوسرے مردوں کے غلبہ سے تیری پناہ مانگتا ہوں۔

میں ان کی خدمت کرتا رہا یہاں تک کہ ہم خیبر سے واپس آئے اور وہ صفیہ بنت حیا کے ساتھ واپس آئے جو (مال غنیمت میں) ملی تھی۔ میں دیکھوں گا کہ وہ اس کے لیے چادر یا کپڑے کے ساتھ تکیہ بنا رہا ہے اور اسے اپنے پیچھے بٹھاتا ہے یہاں تک کہ ہم الصحابہ پہنچ گئے جہاں اس نے چمڑے کی چٹائی میں کچھ حیس (ایک قسم کا برتن) بنایا اور مجھے بھیجا۔ لوگوں کو کال کریں)۔ چنانچہ میں نے کچھ لوگوں کو بلایا اور انہوں نے کھانا کھایا، اور یہ وہ کھانا تھا جو اس کے ساتھ اس کی شادی کی تکمیل پر دیا گیا تھا۔ پھر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم آگے بڑھے یہاں تک کہ احد پہاڑ نظر آ گیا جس پر آپ صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا کہ یہ وہ پہاڑ ہے جو ہم سے محبت کرتا ہے اور ہم اس سے محبت کرتے ہیں۔ پھر جب مدینہ نظر آیا تو فرمایا: اے اللہ، بے شک میں اس کے دونوں پہاڑوں کے درمیان جو کچھ ہے اسے مقدس کرتا ہوں جیسا کہ ابراہیم نے مکہ کو مقدس کیا تھا۔ اے اللہ ان کی مٹی اور صاع میں برکت عطا فرما۔” (نپنے کی اکائیاں، یعنی ان دونوں اکائیوں میں جو کچھ وہ ناپتے ہیں اس میں برکت دیتے ہیں)۔

عن أَنَس بْن مَالِكٍ يَقُولُ
قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ لِأَبِي طَلْحَةَ الْتَمِسْ لَنَا غُلَامًا مِنْ غِلْمَانِكُمًا مِنْ غِلْمَانِكُمًا مِنْ غِلْمَانِكُمْ يَخْدُهُ ةَ يُرْدِفُنِي وَرَاءَهُ فَكُنْتُ أَخْدُمُ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ كُلَّمَا نَزَلَ كُلَّمَا نَزَلَ فَكُنْتُ أَكْتُمُ أَكْمُهُ نَزَلَ فَكُنْتُ

اللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الْهَمِّ وَالْحَزَنِ وَالْعَجْزِ وَالْكَسَلِ وَالْبُخْلِ وَالْجُبْنِ وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْلَبِنِ وَضَلَعِ الدَّيْلِنِ

فَلَمْ أَزَلْ أَخْدُمُهُ حَتَّى أَقْبَلْنَا مِنْ خَيْبَرَ وَأَقْبَلَ بِصَفِيَّةَ بِنْتِ حُيَيٍّ قَدْ حَازَهَهَاُ فَرَاهُ بِعَبَاءَةٍ أَوْ كِسَاءٍ ثُمَّ يُرْدِفُهَا وَرَاءَهُ حَتَّى إِذَا كُنَّا بِالصَّهْبَاءِ صَنَعَ حَيْتَفَهْبَاءِ صَنَعَ حَيْتَوَفَهْسًا فِي نِطَعٍ اَ فَأَكَلُوا وَكَانَ ذَلِكَ بِنَاءَهُ بِهَا ثُمَّ أَقْبَلَ حَتَّى إِذَا بَدَا لَهُ أُحُدٌ قَالَ هَذَا جُبَيْلٌ يُحِبُّنَا وَنُحِبُّهُ فَلَمَّا أَشْرَفَ عَلَى الْمَدِينَةِ قَالَ اللَّهُمَّ إِنِّي أُحَرِّمُ مَا بَيْنَ إِنِّي أُحَرِّمُ مَا بَيْنَ جَبَلَيْهَا مَا بَرَهَمِ مِثَرَ مَا بَرَهُ كَّةَ اللَّهُمَّ بَارِكْ لَهُمْ فِي مُدِّهِمْ وَصَاعِهِمْ۔

Feeling down in the dumps, depressed, having the blues…

These are just some of the terms used to describe a feeling of hopelessness and despair that can hit even the most positive of us at some point in our lives.

Prophet Muhammad taught us a dua against despondency which, in amazing brevity, also reveals the consequences of acute depression. The dua reads as follow:

O’ Allah I seek your protection from anxiety, sorrow, inability, laziness, cowardice, stinginess, overpowering debt and subjugation by fellow man.

This du’a speaks about the eight emotional traits of a person overcome by severe dejection:

1. Anxiety:

An unexplained cloud of constant worry, fear, a boding that something bad is going to take place. You feel agitated, restless, and are on the edge all the time.

2. Sorrow:

A sense of dejection that crushes both your body and mind. You almost believe that it is not possible to be happy. Feeling of not being cherished and respected by anyone

3. A feeling of uselessness:

4. Laziness/fatigue:

5. Cowardice:

Lack of self-confidence. Strong feelings of worthlessness or guilt. A bleak outlook—nothing will ever get better and there’s nothing you can do to improve your situation.

6. Stinginess:

Not interested in the welfare of others. You are too preoccupied in your own gloom to even think of the happiness of other people.

7. Overpowering debt:

Trouble focusing, making decisions, you become financially reckless in the hope of buying yourself out of misery. You engage in escapist behavior

8. Subjugation by fellow man:

Under the control of other people. You feel pressured by those around you. You no longer believe in yourself and feel compelled to toe the line.

None of you should die except while assuming the best about Allah. (Muslim)

No calamity befalls the earth and neither your own selves unless it be laid down in our decree long before we bring it into being – verily that is easy for Allah. So that you may not despair over whatever good escapes you nor become arrogant over whatever good has come your way. (Quran 57: 22)

May Allah grant us the ability to turn each anxiety, each fear and each concern into an opportunity for making dua and turning to Him with repentance.

افسردہ اور پریشان ہونے پر کہنے کی دعا

یہ صرف کچھ اصطلاحات ہیں جو ناامیدی اور مایوسی کے احساس کو بیان کرنے کے لیے استعمال ہوتی ہیں جو ہماری زندگی کے کسی موقع پر ہم میں سے سب سے زیادہ مثبت کو بھی متاثر کر سکتی ہیں۔

تاہم جب اداسی، اداسی اور ناخوشی ہماری زندگی کا مستقل نشان بن جاتی ہے، جب یہ ناامیدی، بے بسی اور بے کاری کا احساس پیدا کرتی ہے، جب یہ ہماری کام کرنے، مطالعہ کرنے، کھانے پینے، سونے اور لوگوں کے ساتھ گھل مل جانے کی صلاحیت میں خلل ڈالتی ہے۔ مایوسی کی غیر معمولی سطح سے دوسری صورت میں ڈپریشن کہلاتا ہے۔

نبی محمد نے ہمیں مایوسی کے خلاف ایک دعا سکھائی جو حیرت انگیز اختصار کے ساتھ شدید ڈپریشن کے نتائج کو بھی ظاہر کرتی ہے۔ دعا درج ذیل ہے:

اے اللہ میں بے چینی، غم، عاجزی، کاہلی، بزدلی، بخل، قرض پر غالب آنے اور ساتھی انسان کی محکومی سے تیری پناہ چاہتا ہوں۔

یہ دعا شدید مایوسی کے شکار شخص کی آٹھ جذباتی خصلتوں کے بارے میں بتاتی ہے

پریشانی:
مسلسل پریشانی، خوف، ایک ایسی بوڈنگ کا ایک غیر واضح بادل کہ کچھ برا ہونے والا ہے۔ آپ مشتعل، بے چین محسوس کرتے ہیں، اور ہر وقت کنارے پر رہتے ہیں۔
دکھ:
افسردگی کا احساس جو آپ کے جسم اور دماغ دونوں کو کچل دیتا ہے۔ آپ کو تقریبا یقین ہے کہ خوش رہنا ممکن نہیں ہے۔ کسی کی طرف سے عزت اور احترام نہ کرنے کا احساس
بے کاری کا احساس:
بے بسی اور ناامیدی کا احساس۔ ایک تاریک نقطہ نظر – کچھ بھی کبھی بہتر نہیں ہوگا اور آپ اپنی صورتحال کو بہتر بنانے کے لیے کچھ نہیں کر سکتے۔ آپ شکار کے موڈ میں بند ہیں۔ اس سے آپ کی برداشت کی سطح کم ہو جاتی ہے۔ سب کچھ اور ہر کوئی آپ کے اعصاب پر آجاتا ہے۔
سستی/تھکاوٹ:
نہ کوئی دلچسپی اور نہ ہی خود کو اٹھانے کی کوئی خواہش۔ تھکاوٹ، کاہلی، اور جسمانی طور پر سوکھا ہوا محسوس کرنا۔ آپ کا پورا جسم بھاری محسوس کر سکتا ہے، اور یہاں تک کہ چھوٹے کام بھی تھکا دینے والے ہیں یا انہیں مکمل ہونے میں زیادہ وقت لگتا ہے۔

دعا ڈپریشن-پریشانیاں5۔ ساتھی:
خود اعتمادی کی کمی۔ بیکار یا جرم کے شدید احساسات۔ ایک تاریک نقطہ نظر – کچھ بھی کبھی بہتر نہیں ہوگا اور آپ اپنی صورتحال کو بہتر بنانے کے لیے کچھ نہیں کر سکتے۔

بخل:
دوسروں کی بھلائی میں دلچسپی نہیں رکھتے۔ آپ اپنی ہی اداسی میں اتنے مصروف ہیں کہ دوسرے لوگوں کی خوشی کا سوچ بھی نہیں سکتے۔
قرض سے زیادہ طاقت:
توجہ مرکوز کرنے، فیصلے کرنے میں دشواری، آپ اپنے آپ کو مصیبت سے نکالنے کی امید میں مالی طور پر لاپرواہ ہو جاتے ہیں۔ آپ فراری رویے میں مشغول ہیں۔
ساتھی آدمی کی طرف سے محکومیت:
دوسرے لوگوں کے کنٹرول میں۔ آپ اپنے آس پاس کے لوگوں سے دباؤ محسوس کرتے ہیں۔ آپ کو اب اپنے آپ پر یقین نہیں ہے اور آپ کو لکیر کو پیر کرنے پر مجبور محسوس ہوتا ہے۔

ایک مسلمان کو ہمیشہ اللہ کے بارے میں بہترین گمان رکھنا چاہیے۔ اسے اپنی پوری کوشش کرنی چاہیے اور بہترین نتائج کی امید رکھنی چاہیے: کہ اللہ اس کے اچھے اعمال کو قبول کرے گا۔ کہ اللہ اپنے فضل سے اسے بخش دے گا۔ اور یہ کہ اللہ اسے برکت دے گا کہ وہ اپنی زندگی کو، اس کے اختتام تک، ایمان پر گزارے۔ حضرت محمد صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم نے فرمایا:

تم میں سے کسی کو موت نہیں آنی چاہیے سوائے اس کے کہ اللہ کے بارے میں بہترین گمان ہو۔ (مسلمان)

تمام حالات میں ہمارا چیلنج یہ ہے کہ ہم اس پختہ یقین کے ساتھ جتنا بھی ہوسکے بہترین کام کریں کہ جو کچھ ہمیں تکلیف دیتا ہے اس کا مقصد کبھی بھی ہمیں یاد نہیں کرنا تھا اور جو بھی ہمیں یاد کرتا ہے وہ ہمارے لئے کبھی نہیں تھا۔ ہم یقین رکھتے ہیں کہ ہماری زندگی بالآخر اللہ کی مرضی کے مطابق ہوتی ہے!

نہ زمین پر کوئی مصیبت آتی ہے اور نہ تمہاری جانوں پر، جب تک کہ وہ ہمارے حکم میں اس کے وجود میں آنے سے بہت پہلے لکھ دی جائے، بے شک یہ اللہ کے لیے آسان ہے۔ تاکہ جو بھلائی آپ سے بچ جائے اس پر آپ مایوس نہ ہوں اور جو بھلائی آپ کے راستے میں آئی ہے اس پر تکبر نہ کریں۔ (قرآن 57:22)

اللہ ہمیں ہر پریشانی، ہر خوف اور ہر فکر کو دعا کرنے اور توبہ کے ساتھ اپنی طرف رجوع کرنے کے موقع میں بدلنے کی توفیق عطا فرمائے۔
